Absolute Archaeology confidently undertake full preparation, quantification, cataloguing and preliminary assessment of all material recovered from site in accordance with MoRPHE, and IFA guidelines, through to full publication.
Our areas of expertise include the post-excavation assessment of:
We work closely with a range of specialists to ensure that the archaeological assemblages that are retrieved from fieldwork can be analysed and understood fully.
When a programme of fieldwork has taken place (e.g. watching brief, evaluation or excavation) and this was positive, there will be a need for post-excavation assessment and analysis. This is a significant part of any archaeological project, for without post-excavation assessment the results of the fieldwork are limited. Post-excavation processes are usually divided into two types: assessment and analysis.
Post-excavation assessment involves the preparation (cleaning and sorting), quantification and statistical assessment, cataloguing and general identification of archaeological material. The results of this will then be used to inform a strategy of post-excavation analysis, involving a detailed examination of a variety of material from the assemblage and can include specialist reporting on ceramics, metalwork, palaeoenvironmental samples and other sophisticated archaeological specialisms.
All of this information is then used to understand, not just the artefacts retrieved from fieldwork, but also the actual site itself, helping to determine its role, character and age. Post-excavation is therefore one of the most significant issues for archaeological projects and for understanding the Historic Environment.
