Historic Building Recording

Absolute Archaeology undertakes a wide range of historic building recording projects to the highest professional standards. From the compilation of simple photographic records to the completion of complex measured drawings, alongside documentary analysis, Absolute Archaeology can deliver the full range of built heritage surveys.

Although much of the work we undertake in regards to recording historic buildings is associated with development, we also offer a service to private clients, just interested in the history of their property.

Our skills include:

  • Targeted building recording comprising electronic, photographic and measured survey;
  • Adherence to English Heritage building recording standards(see the English Heritage publication Understanding Historic Buildings);
  • Ortho-rectified photography;
  • Written description and analysis of building stratigraphy and historic development;
  • Assessment of building materials;
  • Written report charting the history and development of the building, including full digitised scaled illustrations.

More information about Historic Building Recording

Historic Building Survey may be highlighted as a condition when seeking Listed Building Consent and planning permission within a Conservation Area, ahead of development incorporating a structure of architectural or historic significance. Conversely, it may be asked of locally listed buildings or non-designated heritage assets (buildings or structures that are important locally, but which do not have national designation).

Historic Building Recording can vary from simple scaled photographic surveys, to orthorectified photography (creating a scaled composite mosaic of a building or part thereof), to complex drawn records incorporating an analysis of the documentary and architectural records of a building.
