Absolute Archaeology's experienced team can competently undertake small to medium scale excavations, implementing targeted research and assessment, to determine the nature and extent of the archaeology.
We strictly adhere to the Institute of Field Archaeologists standards and guidelines and are fully committed to the accurate and precise recording of the historic environment.
Our comprehensive understanding of the pressures of development enables us to work closely with our clients in order to carry out the highest standard of excavation without compromising the requirements of the project.
Archaeological excavation is required when previously identified archaeology is deemed to be threatened by a proposed development. When this is significant enough to require preservation by record (PPG16 paragraph 13), small-trench or open area excavations may be necessary, depending on the size, complexity and nature of the site.
Excavation includes the recording of all, or an agreed percentage, of existing features, structures, artefacts, ecofacts and other extant archaeology.
Excavation is always the last resort and is not issued lightly. It is usually issued after an evaluation has discovered archaeology. Where preservation in situ is not possible then a thorough record of the site must be made for future generations, via excavation.
Excavation is destructive but aims to understand the nature, character and date of a site and to place that site into a wider historic environment context.
