More information about Evaluations...

Evaluations can range from small hand dug test pit investigation to large machine excavated trenching schemes. The process is designed to assess the potential for archaeology to exist on a site, prior to development taking place.

Evaluations act as a preliminary investigative technique to support the planning process, helping to advise a local authority on the potential extent, level of preservation, date, character and significance of surviving archaeology.

Evaluations are often preceded by a desk-based assessment and aim to inform recommendations for future work and to assess the impact of the development on the historic environment.

Where archaeology is discovered through an evaluation it can lead to a further programme of archaeological excavation, focused upon understanding the archaeology.
